In Bruges

In Bruges

In Bruges, released in Russia as «Залечь на дно в Брюгге» (“Lie Low in Bruges”), is one of my all-time favorite movies. I can't say how many times I've watched it, but I'm still not tired of it. That's probably why I decided to go ahead and translate it. I mean — maybe I'd finally get tired of it along the way? So I did, I translated it. Still didn't get tired of it, though. But here's the translation.

A few words about the film.

Novice hitman Ray (Colin Farrell) gets his first job. But during the, so to speak, work everything goes wrong and he accidentally kills a child. Right away his criminal bosses order him to leave London and lie low in the Belgian city of Bruges. Ray is accompanied by his senior partner in the dangerous business, Ken (Brendan Gleeson). Together they have to spend two weeks in the city, waiting for who knows what instructions. And so, just before Christmas, they arrive in the fairy-tale city of Bruges, where snow falls on Gothic buildings, tourists gaze from the bell tower, and swans swim in the canals. There are also drugs, guns, gangsters, prostitutes, a dwarf, and a painting by Hieronymus Bosch.

In Bruges is sort of a crime comedy. That is, there are jokes in the film. And at the same time it's a drama. It's a film about guilt, about faith, about morality and about redemption. It has a rich, at times surreal atmosphere, excellent actors with Irish accents, and a gorgeous score. In Bruges is a sad Christmas fairy tale for grown-ups. By the way, Colin Farrell won a Golden Globe for the lead role in this fairy tale.

For those who want to check it out, the translation (made as subtitles) is attached at the end of this post. If needed, I can write some comments on the film/translation/plot, roughly like the ones for the “Conchords”.

Both the original and the translation contain a lot of strong language. The film also has scenes of violence and drug use. Not something to show to children, your mom, your grandma or just sensitive people.

One more thing. Since someone has already asked once, it makes sense to say this right away:
Yes, I know the film already has about a dozen different translations. I have no idea whether they're good or bad — I've never watched In Bruges in translation. So this translation wasn't made to compete with anyone. It's just that I really like the film.

I hope you'll like it too.

Naturally, the subtitles were made on Cotranslate.Net.
