The official Kubuntu website has posted news about the release of the new LTS version 26.04, codenamed Resolute Raccoon. I'm on the LTS before last, from four years ago (22.04), so it's time to upgrade.
I'm not a big fan of the built-in upgrade process, and besides, once every few years it's nice to wipe everything and reinstall it the same way, only better. The process isn't much fun (in Russian), which is probably why I don't get around to it very often.
The new version drops X11 in favor of Wayland. A few years ago, when I was setting up two 4K monitors, X11 had problems with upscaling out of the box. And Wayland had the problem that nothing supported it yet and it basically didn't work properly. If this version handles two monitors plug'n'play, without startup scripts and downscale arguments for a bunch of apps, that'll already be a big win.
So I'm stocking up on TV shows, beer and backups — time to reinstall everything.
