Here's a little roundup of what's new in TV shows this January. I've already talked about The Night Manager and Red Eye — both are worth watching. Moving on:
Shrinking
The third season started yesterday. This is the best, most touching and genuinely good comedy I've come across since After Life. This time they even brought in Michael J. Fox, and he immediately cracked a funny joke.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
The adventures of a young hapless knight and his squire, based on Martin's books, with all the Lannisters, Baratheons and Targaryens, 100 years before Ned Stark's execution. Only 2 episodes are out so far, but it's safe to say it has already caught up with Game of Thrones in terms of naturalism. At the same time, it hasn't yet beaten House of the Dragon's level of boredom — didn't fall asleep once. But it's not gripping at all either, it may well slide into gloom.
Steal
Not based on Martin's books, but it has Sansa Stark. Sansa has grown up, taken the trendy name Zara and got a job at an investment fund. The fund gets robbed in style right at the beginning, and the rest is the investigation. On offer: gangsters, bitcoins, plus conspiracies of reptilians, illuminati and the British secret services. Not a masterpiece, a bit dull, but watchable.
Hijack
In the first season a seasoned negotiator, cool Idris Elba, tried to talk down the hijackers of a plane. This time, instead of a plane, it's a metro train in Berlin, and everything is a bit unusual. The start drags, but it's watchable. Although I'd rather they made another season of Luther.
Memory of a Killer
A seasoned hitman has gotten a bit older and come down with Alzheimer's. One moment he freezes, the next he leaves his gun in the fridge — and he's got a family and a dangerous job. Something like that. But it's not a comedy, no, he still shoots and looks pretty sprightly. The hitman's boss is played by Michael Imperioli from The Sopranos. The first two episodes are fine.
The Rookie
Also back with a new (eighth!) season. Those who like it, like it — there's not going to be anything new here anymore.
Under Salt Marsh
Supposed to be a dark murder mystery in a small town™. Starring Kelly Reilly and His High Sparrowness. You can probably expect a fun Welsh accent. Comes out tomorrow.
