# Dark theme

![Скриншот темной темы сервиса Доктурист](https://graker.ru/sites/default/files/styles/max_1300x1300/public/images/2026-11/darktheme2.png.webp?itok=V_BzW50A)

Yesterday I added a dark theme to Docturist. The groundwork was laid back during the [redesign](https://graker.ru/en/news/2026/10/07/pr-600), but I didn’t do it right away, or I’d never have finished.

It’s a three-way setting: always light / always dark / follow the system (meaning get the setting from the browser). Looks okay, I like it, no feedback from users yet.

But the dark theme immediately started pushing me toward dark thoughts. Because what is there even to say? Bolted it on, done. What’s interesting here for a tech blog? The code for asking the browser which colors it prefers? How to put a set of colors into frontend variables and stash the user’s choice in localStorage?

The answer to all of it is the same: Chat gee pee tea, make me a dark theme for my little site. Chat gee pee tea, the panels are too light, and you forgot to paint the editor form with shoe polish. There we go, nice one. Run the tests. Go prod.

As I wrote in [April](https://graker.ru/en/news/2026/04/08/robots-code-we-take-responsibility) and mentioned later at the [meetup](https://graker.ru/en/news/2026/08/11/zeldevmeetup-talk-2026), little articles about programming have to be reborn somehow. There’s no point writing them anymore, because there’s no point reading them. We need to write something else, and that something else is apparently bubbling up and taking shape somewhere right now. Because you can’t just not write anything at all.

P.S. While writing this note, I dropped into the Laravel chat. And there a few live human beings were having a lively discussion on how to hook A up to B up to C. Maybe it’s not that bleak after all.
